App Planning and UX Design to Foster Informed Care Decision-Making

Industry
Healthcare

Summary

A US-based healthcare SaaS company wanted to build an application that fosters informed decision-making for patients and physicians — with a patient knowledge base, physician treatment-plan creation, and patient treatment-consent collection. It needed expert help finalizing the idea, devising the full functionality set, and prioritizing features to start development. INNERLUXES's healthcare business analyst delivered a requirements specification, a prioritized feature list, and UX wireframes that let the Client kick off development with reduced risk.

About the Client

The Client is a US-based healthcare SaaS company providing digital solutions that help medical professionals educate patients, ensure their understanding of the treatment process, and help patients make decisions about consent to treatment.

The Challenge

The Client wanted to develop a SaaS application to foster informed decision-making for patients and physicians regarding medical diseases and conditions. To achieve this, the shared decision-making app needed a knowledge base for patients, treatment-plan creation for physicians, and patient consent collection. The Client needed expert help to finalize the application's idea, devise a full functionality set, and prioritize features to start the development project.

The Solution

Given INNERLUXES's experience with healthcare software development, the Client commissioned us to create a detailed feature list and a requirements specification. INNERLUXES's healthcare business analyst explored the project idea and interviewed key stakeholders to describe the application's vision in line with their needs.

With the obtained information, INNERLUXES's BA specified the application user groups and developed an app specification.

The following user groups were distinguished:

  • Patients.
  • Physicians.
  • Admins — to manage educational materials and grant patients and physicians access to the application.
  • Medical staff — to manage a consent database.

The app specification included:

  • The feature tree for all user groups.
  • Requirements for secure data storage (patient–doctor in-app interactions and aggregated patient consents).
  • Requirements for creating and updating a library of educational materials for patients.
  • Accurate project cost and duration estimations and a risks register.

Having described and prioritized the functional app requirements, INNERLUXES's BA created wireframes to visualize the future application's interface.

The Results

  • The Client obtained an application requirements specification and a full list of prioritized app features.
  • This enabled the Client to start building the application for patients and physicians to make informed decisions about the treatment process and discuss treatment options openly.
  • INNERLUXES's business analysis helped the Client avoid risks related to potential project modifications and save development time.

Methodologies and Tools

  • Interviews, brainstorming, business model analysis, system analysis, functional decomposition, process design, UX prototyping.
