An MVP for a Chronic Disease Management App
Summary
INNERLUXES delivered the MVP of a chronic disease care product for a US healthcare startup. The app helps users stay in control of their health and access personalized content tailored to their conditions — built HIPAA-compliant on AWS and delivered in five months.
About the Client
The Client is a US healthcare startup launched by experienced healthcare practitioners. It offers education, guidance, and accountability to people with chronic diseases such as diabetes, prediabetes, and cardiovascular disease. The Client wanted to empower patients to take control of their health — engaging them in disease reversal rather than just management, and building holistic records of each patient's health state (combining information from different care providers, lifestyle data, and more). With an initial concept of a user app and an admin app, it sought a proficient healthcare software development partner to turn the vision into reality.
MVP Design and Development
Trusting INNERLUXES's track record in healthcare mobile app development, the Client engaged us to plan and build the chronic disease care MVP. INNERLUXES began with requirements elicitation, feature-set design, and solution and project planning. A regulatory consultant analyzed the planned functionality and software risks and concluded the platform didn't require FDA submission; still, because the software processes protected health information (PHI), INNERLUXES followed HIPAA guidelines throughout development. The product was built using a containerized architecture and AWS services (such as Amazon EC2 and Amazon ECS). The Client gathered feedback from investors and potential consumers during development, and the Agile approach let those user needs become new requirements implemented in following iterations. The MVP was completed within five months — an admin web app for content management and a cross-platform mobile user app for chronic disease management, combining self-learning, disease self-management, and health-record keeping.
User-Facing Functionality
Users (people with chronic diseases) enter their health and lifestyle information manually and have access to:
- User onboarding — registration, consent to PHI processing, an introductory video, a subscription payment gateway, and pop-up guidance.
- Health assessment — a health questionnaire.
- A lifestyle tracker — weight, hours of sleep, steps and personal step goals, and water consumption.
- A personal health record — add and view health information and export it to a ready-to-print PDF (personal and geographical data, weight, height, BMI, blood pressure, blood glucose, HbA1c, diagnoses, current and cancelled medications, lab tests, recent procedures, and upcoming doctor visits), shareable with a physician via external messengers.
- A personal wellness journey — recommended content (condition-specific articles and videos) and a gallery of all available health content across chronic conditions.
- Nutrition guidance — PDF lists of healthy and unhealthy foods and a library of healthy recipes.
- Configurable notifications — for procedures and tests, water consumption, daily activity, and more.
Admin Functionality
Through the web app, admins upload content on chronic disease management — articles on medication use, healthy recipes, and videos — and add relevant keywords to each item to personalize it. After upload, the content appears to patients with relevant conditions on their personal wellness journey.
Key Outcomes for the Client
- A fully functional chronic disease management MVP within five months.
- An easy way to collect a full medical history from different care providers, plus up-to-date vitals and lifestyle data.
- Unique content to support patients on their journey toward a healthier lifestyle.
